Product Description

52 pp., paper

In this book I briefly investigate the Scriptural data regarding four fundamental issues relating to tongues-speaking. After a basic introduction to the matter (chapter 1), I answer four key questions:

1. What was the structural form of tongues?

In chapter 2 I will answer whether they were formal languages or unstructured emotional praises. This is an important initial question for  analyzing the modern tongues movement.

2. What was the specific content of tongues?

In chapter 3 I will focus on whether they brought authoritative revelation of God's will or were simply opportunities of personal praise and uplift.  This is a question with significant implications for the role of tongues in the church and the Christian life.

3. What was the purpose of tongues?

In chapters 4 and 5, I will consider their two fundamental purposes relative to the apostles as well as to redemptive-history. There we will learn their significance for the apostles themselves, as well as their place in redemptive history.

4. How long were tongues intended to last?

In chapter 6 I will answer the crucial question as to whether God intended for tongues to get the church started off in the new covenant era or were to continue throughout the church's history on earth.

The position presented within is that tongues-speaking allowed the gift person to speak in a known human language without previously knowing it; tongues brought inspired revelation from God; the gift was a sign confirming the apostolic witness and warning of the coming destruction of Jerusalem; and therefore the gift ceased in the first century.

  1. Insightful 5 Star Review

The information about tongues speaking should be read by all who believe it is still a viable behavior for believers. It follows the scriptures and is very informative. It is a great resource for teaching in my Bible classes.

  2. Proof Beyond the Shadow of a Doubt 5 Star Review

I came to this book knowing very little about tongues, and I have come away from this book knowing all I need to know about tongues. The collective evidence in this book has completely settled the issue for me. There is no need to prolong it. The scriptural evidence and arguments used by Gentry are very clear. I am not easily swayed to and fro. I need strong, collective evidence. Gentry fulfills such demands.

Since I already understand good hermeneutics, the power of parallelism in reason (as in Ch. 6) and have the proper background in other areas of theology, this was nearly a no-brainer for me. With those of other backgrounds, such as Pentecostal church congregations, this may not be so easy to accept. Issues may come into play for them such as tradition, groupthink, resistance to change, logical fallacies, hermeneutical mistakes, incorrect presuppositions, and more. Such issues plague humanity in all forms of thought.

Great book! I highly recommend it. As with all of Gentry's books (to my experience thus far), keep on a bookshelf for future reference. I hope you have multiple bookcases in your home! I would hope pastors consider these scriptures and arguments as use in sermons on the topic. I pray those who believe tongues are still operable will come to realize the truth on the matter.

  3. Powerful Packet 5 Star Review

If you're familiar with Dr. Gentry's work, you'll know what to expect. This is a short booklet that reduces the tongues speaking movement to absurdity within the conext of partial preterrism. This is a great read, and I would definitely recommend as a buy for college students or those with questions arising from contact with Neo-pentecostalism.

  4. the tongue untangled 4 Star Review

Dr. Gentry has done the church a service by giving us this short primer on the issues of tongues. I have, off and on, studied this issue for the past forty years and have always wished for a book of this nature and value. I can envision this book being easily used as a handbook for a new members class or an aid in a bible study that may be discussing this issue and need someone to help unwrap the current confusion that is often inherent in the discussion. For such a short book Dr. Gentry was able to pack a lot in it. He writes in such a way that anticipates the most common of questions or objections and than answers with accuracy and authority by his able ability of handling the Word. Generally, good scholarship is lacking or short-circuited when attempting to address such a heated issue as tongues with such brevity, but not so here. The manner in which the issue was addressed coupled with his ease of communication Dr. Gentry capably defends the reality that first century spirit inspired tongues no longer are needed since we now have the final Word in our hands. Well done.
