Tongues-Speaking briefly investigates the Scriptural data regarding four fundamental issues relating to tongues-speaking. After a basic introduction to the matter (chapter 1), I answer four key questions:
1. What was the structural form of tongues?
Capter 2 answers whether they were formal languages or unstructured emotional praises. This is an important initial question for analyzing the modern tongues movement.
2. What was the specific content of tongues?
Chapter 3 focuses on whether they brought authoritative revelation of God's will or were simply opportunities of personal praise and uplift. This is a question with significant implications for the role of tongues in the church and the Christian life.
3. What was the purpose of tongues?
Chapters 4 and 5 consider their two fundamental purposes relative to the apostles as well as to redemptive-history. There we will learn their significance for the apostles themselves, as well as their place in redemptive history.
4. How long were tongues intended to last?
Chapter 6 answers the crucial question as to whether God intended for tongues to get the church started off in the new covenant era or were to continue throughout the church's history on earth.
The position presented within is that tongues-speaking allowed the gift person to speak in a known human language without previously knowing it; tongues brought inspired revelation from God; the gift was a sign confirming the apostolic witness and warning of the coming destruction of Jerusalem; and therefore the gift ceased in the first century.
