FROM THE PREFACE

    This is the second release in GoodBirth Ministries’ Truth About Series™. This new book series deals with topics of deep significance and abiding interest to Bible-believing Christians. The studies are designed for serious Christians who love God’s Word and want to better understand both it and the Christian worldview arising from it. The theme governing this series is: “Sanctifying God’s People through God’s Truth.” Our undergirding theme verse is taken from Christ’s prayer regarding his followers:
     “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth” (John 17:17)

The Point of the About Truth Series
    The Truth About Series™ offers succinct, biblically-based, and carefully-structured studies specifically designed for either personal or small group Bible studies. Not only do the chapters breakdown the material in logical chunks, but at the end of each chapter we present two types of study questions:
    •     Review Questions that assist the reader in better comprehending the core issues dealt with in the chapter.
    •     Discussion Questions that promote further group reflection on the topic beyond that which is presented.
    Unlike many Christian study guides the books in this series will deal seriously with the issues at hand, rather than skimming the surface, stating the obvious, or providing cute stories. The very issues studied merit due consideration because of their significance for the Christian worldview. We will assume the reader’s deep interest in understanding the Bible and its relationship to the topic being analyzed.    

The Significance of the About Truth Series
    Our desire is to help remedy a problem that has plagued God’s people from time immemorial and which is especially problematic today. God warned through Hosea: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” In fact, he informed his Old Testament people that they went “into exile for their lack of knowledge” because their “honorable men” were “famished” and the multitude of the people were parched with thirst” (Isa 5:13). The writer of Hebrews chastises first-century Christians:
    “You have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.” (Heb 5:11–14)
    Christianity is a revealed religion established on divinely-inspired truth claims. As the apostle Paul states: “For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God” (1 Thess 2:13). Thus, we firmly believe that “all Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching” (2 Tim 3:16; cp. 1 Cor 2:4).
    God’s word is exercises a significant influence on the whole Christian life and experience. We become Christians through the instrumentality of his word: “for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God” (1 Pet 1:23). Indeed, “faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ” (Rom 10:17). Because of this Christians must “hold fast the word” unless they have “believed in vain” (1 Cor 15:2)
    The role of God’s word does not end with our new birth. Indeed, we are to grow and develop spiritually by means of that word: “like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation” (1 Pet 2:2). Paul speaks of Christ’s love for the church in Ephesians 5:26 where he adds: “that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word. Hence, Jesus’ prayer to God in our behalf: “sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth” (John 17:17). Therefore Christians must “let the word of Christ richly dwell with you” (Col 3:16) for “the word of truth” is “the power of God” (2 Cor 6:7).
    God has given us the Scriptures “for teaching for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work” (2 Tim 3:17). Therefore, the Christian must study and understand the Bible, for we are commanded to “be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth” (2 Tim 2:15).
    Then having learned God’s word the child of God must apply it to his life, family, society, and culture. Paul insists that you must “speak the word of God without fear” (Php 1:14). He urges the believer to hold “fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict” (Tit 1:9). As a committed Christian you are called to take “every thought captive to the obedience of Christ” (2 Cor 10:5).
    From these several verses we can see the incredible significance of God’s word on the Christian’s life. Our Truth About Series™ is designed to minister to those Christians who are committed to understanding the Bible and the Christian worldview better.
