Samuel M. Frost was a prominent leader in the Full Preterist movement, that is known to outsiders as "Hyper-preterism." He became a Full Preterist in the early 1990s, convinced that it was the key to a proper understanding of biblical eschatology. In 1999 he attended the R. C. Sproul's Ligonier Conference on Eschatology, where he engaged attendees in conversation to introduce them to Full Preterism.

His first book promoting Full Preterism was Misplaced Hope: The Origins of First and Second Century Eschatology (2002). He then helped start a Full Preterist church, where he pastored for four years, while speaking at eschatology conferences.

A few years later, he found his views contradicting a number of important biblical doctrines. He began to realize that he was redefining foundational elements of the Christian faith. This was too great a cost to pay for a new, minority theological position. So he left Full Preterism and now speaks against it.

Conclusion: Why I Left Full Preterism

"For several years, Sam Frost was the academic voice of so-call full preterism. He wrote numerous books, articles, and blog posts in support of it, gave lectures defending it, and responded in print to those who were critical of it. By God's grace, his eyes have been opened to the truly unbiblical nature of this novel doctrine, and he has rightly renounced it. In this work, Frost provides a point-by-point account of his theological journey. In the last several years, we have witnessed several prominent full preterists renounce this heresy and embrace Christianity. May our Lord and Saviof Jesus Christ use Frosts work to open the eyes of many, many more."

--- Keith L. Mathison, Reformation Bible College

"I'm glad there's a debate take place over the subject of Bible prophecy. It's been needed for a long time. There is a tendency, however, among some people who change prophetic views to swing the pendulum too far. They are so disenchanted with what they once believed that they believe it's necessary to reject everything that system taughy. Preterism is gaining a foothold among scholars and laypeople, but some are getting worried that some adherent are taking it to unbiblical extremes. Sam Frost went there and back. His book Why I Left Full PReterism is a great starting point in understanding the inherent dangers of a full pretersm position."

  1. hyper preterism 3 Star Review

Posted by on 4th Nov 2020

I wish academics could agree upon language. Full preterism according to this book appears to be the same thing as hyper preterism which posits that Jesus has already returned and that the whole of prophecy is fulfilled. It is a ridiculous position, and had I known that "full" preterism is the same as hyper preterism I would have never bought the book. However, if you are struggling with this point of view thinking that Jesus' second and final coming is already occurred, it could be the book for you.

  2. Good summary of his reasons to oppose full preterism 3 Star Review

Samuel Frost's short book is easy to read. However, he does not explain his exegetical work thoroughly enough. If I had been a full preterist, I doubt I would have been convinced to rethink my position had this been the only thing I read. On the other hand, I did find that with some work on my own, I could follow his reasoning well enough to be introduced to the core issues in full preterism. I would also have appreciated the book being a second edition with many of the printing errors corrected.
